The prototype laser has now achieved its first milestone in activation testing at the Aqwest laboratory in California.
Aqwest is developing a high-pulse energy nanosecond laser for the Department of Energy (DOE) for heating of high-energy density plasmas. The laser amplifier uses Aqwest’s proprietary edge-pumped / gas cooled laser disks. In Phase I testing, the laser has attained 30 J pulse energy in a long-pulse mode, 17 Joules in a nanosecond mode, and pulse repetition rate of up to 20 Hz, which confirms the path to achieving full operating parameters. Operation at 50 J pulse output is targeted for 2023.
